Are Your Dental Problems Giving You Headache?

TMJ issues headaches
Published By Dr. Rachel Hall at 15 September, 2018

Did you know that your headaches could be caused by dental problems?

Are you suffering from chronic headaches, a sore neck or a clicking jaw? You could be suffering from a dental condition called temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD)…

At Evolve Dental in Kenmore, we offer neuromuscular dentistry for patients who are suffering from the symptoms of TMD. Neuromuscular dentistry focuses predominately on correcting the bite to alleviate pain and discomfort to your jaw. Our team of highly qualified dental professionals will work with you to discuss your symptoms and determine the best treatment for your needs.

What is TMD?

The temporomandibular joint is the hinge between the lower and upper jawbone and is located just behind your ear.  Typically the joints are flexible, which allows the jaw to move smoothly up and down and side to side and enabling you to talk, chew, and yawn. The muscles that are attached to and surrounding the jaw joint are then able to control the position and movement of the jaw. For sufferers of TMD, there may be problems with the muscles around the TMJ or the hinge itself.

What are the causes of TMJ issues?

There are many causes of TMD and often determining the source of this condition proves to be difficult, however, at Evolve Dental we can use our neuromuscular dentistry techniques to treat your bite. During your consultation, we will discuss possible causes of your condition and encourage you to share any accidents or potential causes with our team as this may help with our diagnosis and treatment. Some common causes of this condition include:

  • Grinding or clenching, which puts pressure on the TMJ
  • Dislocation of the soft cushion or disc between the ball and socket
  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the TMJ
  • Stress, which causes the patient to tighten their facial and jaw muscles or clench their teeth
  • Injuries such as whiplash or a shock to the jaw

The symptoms of TMJ issues

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction will affect each patient differently and may cause more discomfort based on severity and cause. For those patients suffering from this condition, they may find it difficult to open their mouth wide and may often experience a lock in their jaw. Clicking and popping along with pain in the neck, shoulders and forehead are common symptoms of TMD. For patients who suffer chronic headaches, this could be a result of the increased pressure from your TMD.

How Evolve Dental can help treat TMJ problems

Neuromuscular dentistry is designed to correct the patient’s bite and as a result, relieve the pressure placed on the mandible and surrounding muscles. We have a neuromuscular trained dentist who can diagnose and treat your TMD and virtually eliminate all of your painful symptoms. Research has shown that bite correction can relieve some of the pain caused by your TMD. We can also prescribe orthotic therapy for patients suffering from this condition. Our principal dentist, Dr Rachel actually wore an orthotic herself and can share first-hand the success of this treatment.
