Toxins and Dental Health

Good dental health relies on good overall health, if your body is full of toxins this impairs your immune function and ability to heal. But what is there are products and materials in dentistry that are toxic and impact your health, what then?

Toxins And Dentistry

Toxins are very relevant to dentistry, especially in holistic dentistry, from two main perspectives:

  1. Toxins can add to or be an underlying causative factor when it comes to gum disease and tooth decay. The toxins need to be dealt with to lessen the burden and impact on the body, its immune system, digestive processes and liver function. It is impossible to improve someone’s nutritional status and provide them with the building blocks they need to prevent or treat dental disease while the body is in a toxic state. If a patient has a toxic system they will most likely have chronic inflammation, be acidic, have poor digestion and liver function and more aggressive mouth bacteria. It will make it harder for them to absorb the nutrients to maintain healthy gums and prevent tooth decay or infections.
  2. Holistic dentists want to ensure the materials and products used in their patient’s mouth are as non-toxic and as in harmony with the body as possible so as not to add to the toxic load, create allergic reactions or be detrimental to their health. It is crucial for a holistic dentist to understand the impact of toxins and the effects of toxicity to be able to support their patients to achieve optimal dental health.

Also for patients wanting to reduce their heavy metal burden via mercury- amalgam filling removal, toxic overload will impede the process of mercury excretion from the body and it would not be advisable to commence dental revision of the amalgam fillings until the body is less toxic and in a state to handle the massive demands that mercury elimination asks of it.

What Toxins in Dentistry Are a Concern?

The main toxins that are a concern are mercury from dental amalgam or so-called silver fillings. Fluoride found in our water supplies if you live in a fluoridated area, toothpaste, mouthwashes, some dental filling materials and the good old fashioned fluoride treatments that dentists are so fond of. Bisphenol A (BPA) which can be found in many cheaper brands of white filling materials and chemicals that can be in filling materials, oral care products and tooth whitening agents.

As a holistic dentist, I ensure that in my dental practice we choose products that are as natural as possible to best support the health and well- being of my patients, myself and my dental team.

(As an aside – dentists are massively exposed to mercury every day in the course of their work as they are ignorant of the issues surrounding dental amalgam. Dentists, myself included, are taught – aka “brainwashed” at the dental school and by the dental profession that amalgam is a great filling material and perfectly safe for them to work with and use on their patients.).

If you want a dentist that is going to support you to have a healthy mouth for a healthier longer life where you can be assured they do not use toxic materials then call Evolve Dental Healing today 3720 1811 to book an appointment.

In my next blog, I cover how to detox in simple and easy steps.
