The large pieces of amalgam are captured in a filter unit which is then emptied into a special airtight container so it can be stored under chemicals which prevent outgassing of mercury. It is illegal to throw amalgam scraps into the bin or wash them down the sink because of the mercury content yet dentists can put it in your teeth. How crazy is that?
The smaller sludge that amalgam creates is captured in an amalgam separator filter so it does not end up in the water supply, unlike most dental practices who are suction waste contains mercury and contributes to environmental pollution.
