At Evolve Dental Healing Brisbane Holistic dentist, we provide caring, high-quality holistic dentistry and safe amalgam removal in a relaxed, fun and friendly environment.
We focus on the physical effects of dental health on the body and vice versa but also understand that for many patients having dental treatment brings up numerous emotional issues and stresses. We are sensitive to the needs of the individual and incorporate a system of health care leading towards the attainment of physical, chemical and emotional aspects of health.
By looking at the whole person; which includes physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, social, spiritual and lifestyle values; it is our aim to educate and encourage responsibility for personal efforts to achieve balance and wellbeing.
What is holistic dentistry?
Holistic dentistry includes mainstream dentistry in conjunction with a focus on diet and nutrition, the use of supplements where appropriate along with techniques to improve emotional and energetic wellbeing.
Quality dental care is provided utilising aesthetic composite resin or porcelain fillings and crowns whilst aiming to safely minimise exposure to mercury and heavy metals during the removal of existing amalgam or metal restorations. Rubber dam, air filtration with mercury removal system and high vacuum suction are used as a standard during amalgam removal to ensure contact with and inhalation of mercury vapour is greatly reduced.
All areas of conventional restorative and preventative dentistry are offered; except amalgam or metallic restorations are not used.
We are an amalgam-free dental practice.
Dental Amalgam
Dental amalgam is a restorative material that has been used for many years. It is made from a combination of metals, including silver, tin and copper, combined with mercury to form a stable material. In set amalgam, the mercury is bound within the structure of the filling.
Scientific evidence indicates that very small amounts of mercury vapour can be released from amalgam fillings, particularly during activities such as chewing. Major health organisations, including the World Health Organisation and other regulatory bodies, consider dental amalgam to be a safe and effective material for most patients.
We do not claim that dental amalgam causes illness. However, some patients prefer to limit their exposure to mercury and choose alternative materials where appropriate. There is ongoing research into mercury exposure and health, and individual concerns may vary.
Patients may choose to avoid new amalgam fillings, as a range of alternative restorative materials is available. Where an existing amalgam filling requires replacement—for example due to decay or wear—we recommend that removal is carried out using appropriate safety protocols to minimise exposure during the procedure.
Many patients who seek amalgam removal at Evolve Dental Healing Brisbane do so based on personal preferences or specific health considerations, and we support informed decision-making tailored to each individual.
Amalgam Removal Protocol
When dental amalgam fillings are adjusted, drilled, or removed, small amounts of mercury vapour and particulate matter may be released. Appropriate clinical techniques are used to reduce exposure for both patients and the dental team.
During removal, amalgam may break into fragments. Standard dental protocols are designed to limit contact with oral tissues and reduce the likelihood of ingestion or inhalation of particles.
To minimise exposure, amalgam removal is carried out using established safety measures. These may include the use of a rubber dam, high-volume suction, and air filtration systems.
A rubber dam is a protective sheet placed around the teeth being treated. It helps isolate the treatment area and reduces the likelihood of debris or fluids contacting the surrounding oral tissues. Many patients also find it improves comfort during procedures.
Air filtration and high-volume evacuation systems are used to capture aerosols generated during dental procedures. These systems assist in maintaining air quality within the treatment environment and reducing the spread of airborne particles.
The selection of dental instruments and techniques may also influence the efficiency of amalgam removal. For example, certain burs are used to facilitate controlled removal of restorative material. Water irrigation is routinely applied during drilling to reduce heat and assist with debris management.
Treatment rooms may be equipped with ventilation and air filtration systems to support overall environmental safety and comfort.
For patients undergoing more extensive dental treatment, general health measures such as maintaining good nutrition may be discussed as part of overall care. Any recommendations are tailored to the individual and based on their specific needs.
We also take environmental responsibility seriously. Our practice uses an amalgam separator system to capture the majority of amalgam waste generated during procedures, helping to reduce the release of dental materials into wastewater.
Our clinic does not place new amalgam restorations and offers alternative filling materials. Where amalgam removal is clinically indicated, it is performed using protocols designed to support patient and staff safety.
