What is the best toothpaste? Dr Rachel Hall Kenmore dentist explains what she thinks makes the best toothpaste and what to look for when you choose yours.
Unsure of the best toothpaste to use? When it comes to choosing this comes down to personal preference. Most people will simply choose the generic brand that their family used when they were a child. Most often this will be a well-known brand of the minty flavoured contains fluoride variety.
Toothpaste was originally invited to make toothbrushing taste nicer and provide some abrasion against the teeth.
Modern toothpaste now claims that they do everything from reducing plaque and tartar build-up to whitening teeth.
However, do not be fooled by these claims as most of them do not have many active ingredients and the majority of whitening ones contain no whitening agents whatsoever so you will never achieve the dazzling white smile you are after.
When choosing start with one you will like the flavour of as there are now more choices than plain bog standard mint.
Avoid ones for smokers or claims to whiten teeth as they are very abrasive and work by not only removing stains but layers of your tooth enamel too.
However, as this is about more natural ways of caring for your teeth and mouth then look for a fluoride-free natural toothpaste that does not contain harsh chemicals and additives. These can be purchased from health food stores, online or from a holistic dentist if you have one in your area.
Natural products can be hit and miss when it comes to texture and flavour so you will simply have to be willing to experiment and try a few brands before you find the right fit.
