Is Invisalign Right for Me?

Invisalign right for me

If you are considering having your teeth straightened, you must be asking yourself whether ‘braces or Invisalign is right for me?’.

We now see numerous adult patients who ask the same question because they have uneven teeth, crowding, crooked teeth, spaces, over-bites, under-bites and poorly aligned bites. And my answer is that almost anything you can correct with traditional braces using brackets and wires can be done with Invisalign or clear aligners.

Invisalign or Clear Aligners by Spark

At Evolve Dental Healing Kenmore Dentist we use a clear aligner system called Spark and just like Invisalign it uses clear plastic aligners that are almost invisible to the eye to move the teeth, improve your bite and give you the smile you’ve longed for.

It is estimated that four million people in the United States alone have braces at any one time. According to statistics, 25% of them are adults.

However, most adults would prefer not to have train track-style braces, as it can impact their self-esteem and detract from a professional appearance. But how can those who don’t want the appearance of braces have their teeth fixed?

Enter Invisalign or clear aligners. With this method, you can fix any crooked teeth without ever looking like you’ve had braces at all. Clear aligners can correct all types of dental bite and crowding issues, but, not everyone is a candidate.

So how do you know if Invisalign is right for you?

In this article, I’ll go over some of the signs that make you a good candidate for clear aligners, but the only way to know for sure is to book a consultation where you can speak to us about starting the process.

What Is Invisalign aka Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners such as Invisalign or Spark (which is the system we use at Evolve Holistic Dentist Brisbane) are a series of clear trays that change your teeth’s positioning over time. You’ll get a custom 3D scan taken of your teeth and then you’ll wear the first aligner tray once they have been designed and manufactured for you. This will shift the shape of your teeth slightly. Then, you’ll swap this for another tray that will change your teeth slightly more. And so the sequence progresses.

After a series of trays, you’ll have the straight teeth you originally set out to achieve. This way, you get the benefit of braces without having to wear them visibly.

6 signs that Invisalign Is Right For You

1. Your Case Is Straightforward

Most cases of crooked teeth can be fixed with clear aligners. The system can work for those who have underbites, overbites, crossbites, open bites or those who have gaps or crowded teeth. But, that doesn’t mean it works for everyone.

We will be able to assess your case and let you know if clear aligners through Spark (just like Invisalign) are right for you. In more complex cases, you may require dental surgery, or you may not be able to have your teeth straightened without the use of traditional braces.

2. You’re Responsible

You must commit to wearing the aligners as instructed for them to work. Clear aligner trays are removable, meaning you can take them out if you wish. The system relies on you wearing them on your teeth for a set number of hours per day. In most cases, this means you’ll have to wear them all of the time, except when you eat or clean your teeth.

Because you can remove them, some people decide they won’t bother wearing them. They may even lose them. These types of people likely won’t progress very far with Invisalign because they slow down the teeth movements and sabotage their own results.

If you aren’t very committed to changing your teeth, or you know you lose important items easily, Spark or Invisalign probably isn’t the solution for you.

3. You’ve Got All of Your Adult Teeth

In order to have Invisalign, we prefer that you have all of your adult teeth. In some cases, there are adults who still have a baby tooth or two that never fell out as the adult tooth is genetically missing. If this is the case, you may require further orthodontic work before you’re able to start the clear aligner process.

4. You’ve Got Good Oral Hygiene

Having good oral hygiene is a must for braces and clear aligner trays. Not only must your mouth be healthy, but you must be able to take care of your trays so that they don’t cause infections or further issues.

You must clean them at regular intervals and take good care of the trays and your teeth.

Additionally, you will need to ensure your mouth is free of disease or other problems and that you brush regularly before we can provide orthodontic treatments to enhance your smile.

5. You Don’t Smoke

As your trays will be in most of the day, you can’t smoke or use tobacco. This can interfere with the trays themselves, as well as make them dirty. If you smoke too often and remove your trays while you smoke, you may find that your treatment isn’t as effective if you aren’t wearing them for enough time during the day.

Additionally, smoking is incredibly unhealthy for not just your teeth, but your entire body. If you want to have Invisalign and smoke, now might be the best time to quit.

6. You’re Old Enough

Not only do you need to have all of your adult teeth, but you also need to be old enough to wear Invisalign.

There is no upper age limit, and you can have your teeth straightened at any point in your life. But, we prefer not to give sets of clear aligners to young teens or children as they tend not to be consistent in aligner wear or tooth care.

Am I an Invisalign Candidate?

Are you an Invisalign candidate? If you meet the six points listed above, there is a good chance that you’ll benefit from an Invisalign-like system of clear aligners such as Spark as used by Evolve Kenmore Dentist.

As each case is different it is important that we carry out a full assessment of your specific needs and situation.

After an initial consultation to assess suitability, we take comprehensive records of your mouth including photographs and a 3D scan and specialised X-rays so that your case can be individually treatment planned and managed.
