Well, let’s break down what a holistic dentist is and what to look out for when choosing a holistic dentist.

Holistic Dental Care

I’m Dr Rachel Hall a holistic dentist in Brisbane; having been in practice for 30 years, I find it perplexing how some of my colleagues, mostly well-meaning and dedicated individuals, have adopted a pseudoscientific rather than evidence-based philosophy toward our profession.

Many dentists attend professional education courses and read the latest trends and new ideas in dentistry. Much of our training and what is taught is based largely on weak or anecdotal evidence, which can spread misinformation and falsehoods, especially when it comes to holistic dentistry and how we should be addressing the person (you) as a whole.

I have seen many practices and dentists popping up claiming to be holistic when in fact they are not and are jumping on a name or title well aware of the largely susceptible public’s ever-increasing appetite to embrace the latest niche health fad, and see it as an opportunity to increase income.

Thus for you the patient, it is important to understand what a holistic dentist is, what we do and why we do it.

What is holistic dentistry?

Holistic dentists assert that when treating patients, a whole-body approach, comprising one’s overall physical and psychological state should be emphasised. Rather than focusing solely on teeth and gums, dental care is not viewed in isolation but in parallel with comprehensive healthcare.

Holistic dentists are therefore interested in root causes not just symptoms and understand that some dental materials like amalgam mercury fillings and fluoride can have detrimental impacts on health and thus choose not to use products that contain these potential toxic and harmful chemicals.

And that I guess that makes me a holistic dentist and why I created my own holistic dentist office in Brisbane.

Holistic, Biological or Natural Dentist

Holistic or Biological dentistry is a superficial, self-designated term adopted by a relatively small number of practitioners who advocate health-promoting therapies not taught in dental school.

Holistic dentistry is not a recognised specialty as such and does not require any additional formal training.

Any dentist can call themselves a holistic dentist, or any other alluring name. However, a ‘true’ holistic dentist will have undertaken additional education and training in procedures to ensure safe practice when it comes to providing services such as safe amalgam removal.

Many, like myself, will have also studied nutrition, health and wellbeing and other modalities and be members of organisations like The Holistic Dental Association or the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, who are the leaders in science-based biological and holistic dentistry.

Holistic Dentists Are Not All The Same

As with conventional clinicians, holistic dentists can vary greatly in their philosophies and practices. Typically, we oppose the use of certain materials and agents deemed toxic like amalgam and fluoride.

However, not all will advocate for or against amalgam removal and many so-called holistic dentists do not provide SMART procedures that I deem essential for the safe removal of amalgam fillings.

It is thus important to arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible and do your due diligence and research before choosing your Brisbane holistic dentist.

Holistic Dentist – Mouth Doctors?

Simply put, dentists are the doctors of the mouth. While practitioners must have a general health science background, a license to practice dentistry is essentially limited to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity. We are taught and obliged to base our practice of the profession on well established, evidence-based protocols conforming to guidelines set forth by our governing bodies.

And I believe strongly that this should also be the case for holistic dentists, and that is why I am a certified SMART dentist and a member of the IAOMT, ensuring I follow sound principles and scientific evidence-based practice.

Nutrition, Lifestyle, Prevention – Holistic Dentist

Holistic dentists often engage in conversations regarding lifestyle, nutrition, and emotional well-being. Some prescribe blood and hair tests to measure for body chemistry imbalances and if qualified to do so can offer ‘detoxification’ formulas and vitamin supplements.

However, under our general training as a dentist, these topics are not covered in our curriculum so it is important that the dentist has done additional study in these areas to be able to offer you the correct advice.

Even though I have trained in these areas I also make sure I work with fully qualified naturopaths, nutritionists and functional or integrative medical doctors to ensure that you are getting the best care and specific advice for your situation and needs.

It is the duty of every holistic dentist and in my opinion, every dentist to work with specialists where appropriate and needed for your best health and dental outcomes.
